Felixvet Introduces First FDA-Approved Generic Methimazole Tablets for the Treatment of Hyperthyroidism in Cats

Kansas City, Mo. — July 14, 2026 — Felixvet Inc. today announced the commercial availability of Methimazole Coated Tablets, the first FDA-approved generic version of methimazole tablets for the treatment of hyperthyroidism in cats and a therapeutically equivalent alternative to Felimazole®. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 22, 2025, Methimazole Coated Tablets provide veterinarians with a trusted new option for the management of one of the most commonly diagnosed endocrine disorders in feline patients.

Felixvet Methimazole Coated Tablets are available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg strengths for oral use in cats only.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring the first FDA-approved generic methimazole tablets to the veterinary market,” said Lauren Landolph, Vice President, Commercial Strategy & Distribution Channels at Felixvet. “Methimazole has been a cornerstone therapy for the management of feline hyperthyroidism for many years, and this approval represents an important opportunity to expand access to a trusted treatment option for veterinarians, pet owners, and the cats they care for.”

Hyperthyroidism is a common endocrine disorder in cats caused by excessive production of thyroid hormones. Clinical signs may include weight loss, increased appetite, increased thirst and urination, vomiting, and hyperactivity. Methimazole Coated Tablets help manage the disease by inhibiting the synthesis of thyroid hormones.

The FDA approved Methimazole Coated Tablets (ANADA 200-814) after determining the product is bioequivalent to the pioneer drug, Felimazole® (NADA 141-292). The approval followed a comprehensive review of the product’s safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality.

Felixvet’s Methimazole Coated Tablets are available in:

  • 2.5 mg coated tablets – 100-count bottles
  • 5 mg coated tablets – 100-count bottles

The tablets are film-coated and intended for oral administration in cats. Methimazole Coated Tablets are therapeutically equivalent to the pioneer product and provide veterinarians with an FDA-approved treatment option for the long-term management of feline hyperthyroidism.

Felixvet continues to expand its portfolio of FDA-approved companion animal pharmaceuticals, supporting veterinarians and distribution partners with high-quality, bioequivalent treatment options across key therapeutic categories.
